Dressing for Skiing 101

Backcountry Skiing with the Grand Teton in the background
Most people don’t think about traveling to Jackson Hole in the winter, and it’s a shame! Jackson Hole’s outstanding powder and steep pitch make it one of the most treasured ski destinations in the world. Skiing is a major highlight of many winter travelers, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, appeals to skiers of all ages and abilities. Snow King Mountain and Grand Targhee Resort lead to many premium ski destinations, but if you’re exceptionally adventurous (and experienced), try heli-skiing!

Knowing what to wear skiing is essential for a comfortable and safe experience, especially since the average winter temperature in the valley is 21 degrees Fahrenheit, with even cooler conditions up in the mountains. Temperature inversions are also common, raising slope temperatures by 20 to 40 degrees as warm air rises and cold air settles on the valley floor. This means you have to be prepared for anything when heading for a day on the slopes or in the mountains!

Why Dressing Appropriately is So Important

The key to staying comfortable is layering effectively, but ensure each layer has ventilation options to release body heat. For your upper body, look for layers with zippers that run down the chest and jackets with pit zips. For your lower body, choose pants with thigh zippers to allow airflow. The aim is to prevent sweating by allowing heat to escape while avoiding tight areas that restrict circulation, keeping blood flow unrestricted. Stick to a single pair of lighter ski socks, as your boots provide ample insulation, and skip the glove liners, which can constrict circulation. By keeping your core warm, you’ll also help ensure your hands and feet stay comfortable.

What to Wear While Skiing

We’ve taken the liberty of breaking down the preparation into three comprehensive parts: upper body, lower body, and gear.

Upper Body

  • Base – Opt for a thin, lightweight base layer that wicks moisture away and features a zip-down chest for ventilation.
  • Medium Weight – Add an insulating mid-layer with a chest pocket to keep essentials like your phone warm.
  • Insulation – Adjust this layer based on weather conditions. For temperatures 20°F and below, a medium-weight down layer works well, providing warmth without bulk. Choose a vest, synthetic layer, or lightweight down for milder days.
  • Outer – Select a coat with pit zips for ventilation, ample interior pockets, and snow/water resistance. A powder skirt is essential to keep snow out and retain warmth. Consider a detachable hood that fits over a helmet for windy conditions, and look for a high collar for extra wind protection.

Lower Body

  • Underwear – Skip cotton and go for synthetic or wool underwear that wicks moisture to keep you dry.
  • Ski Tight – Adjust tightness based on temperature and wind. Check the cuff stitching to avoid irritation on your shin from ski boots and prevent bunching.
  • Ski Pants – Bib-style pants are ideal for keeping snow out, enhancing mobility, and retaining core warmth. Use side zips to release heat as needed.

Gear

  • Ski Gloves – Keep several pairs in different weights. Look for gloves with easy-on cuffs, snow protection, and minimal wrist constriction. Removable liners come in handy for quick drying.
  • Ski Socks – Lightweight socks are best; your boots provide ample insulation. For extra warmth, consider Lenz sock heaters, which are app-controlled for custom heating and usable in various footwear.
  • Neck Gaiter/Scarf – Essential for retaining heat and preventing frostbite; keep it in your pocket to wear as needed.
